Voting Question: Skype issues! Major audio delay, and video connection problems. Suggestions? Best VoIP alternatives?

I recently moved to China and have been trying to skype my boyfriend in the US, but we are having major issues and have had to sacrifice skype completely. This long distance relationship is hard and i would love to find a way to fix the major audio delay and video connection problems that are occurring. Are there any ways to improve the video quality?
